Why laboratory safety is important?

Laboratory safety

The importance of laboratory safety cannot be emphasized enough. Scientific and educational laboratories can expose people to a hazardous environment that could possibly be chemical, biological, physical, or even radioactive in nature. Thus, ensuring lab safety should be one of the main priorities of an institution.

Laboratory safety measures and hazards are to be taken seriously and strict safety protocols must be implemented. The most important laboratory safety rule is to know how to use all the lab equipment before beginning any research. It is essential for people working in the lab to be familiar with the equipment available to avoid any accidents. It is also a good idea to be mindful of your surroundings and be cautious of what others around you are doing.

  •  Dressing appropriately for the lab, including protective gear, is crucial. One must ensure to wear covered shoes, long pants, lab coats and keeping hair tied up so that they are not exposed.
  • In case of chemical contact with your skin or general exposure to infectious material, make sure to immediately wash hands with soap and water. If the areas exposed include the rest of the body, shower to clean off the exposed skin.
  • Glassware is another potential hazard in labs. Always wear protective eye wear when working around any test tubes, flasks and similar glass equipment. Such equipment should also be thoroughly inspected for chips or cracks before use. Protective, chemically resistant gloves should always be worn, when working with chemicals in glass containers.
  • Be well prepared for any contingencies and follow the correct protocols in the unlikely event of an accident.
  • It is essential to know the full layout of your evacuation routes.
  • Make sure to know where your lab's safety equipment like first aid kits and fire extinguishers are.
  • Memorize emergency phone numbers to call for help in case of an emergency.

A little mindfulness and adherence to the prescribed safety guidelines will help prevent any mishaps in the clinical lab.
