Zohra Bibi, 30, came to the Aga Khan University Hospital (AKUH) with her two year old baby Sher Khan who was rushed in an Ambulance from Hyderabad. The infant fell from the stairs in and hurt his head. An hour later after noticing the swelling on the baby’s head increase, Zohra Bibi and her husband rushed him to a nearby hospital in Hyderabad. The baby was admitted and was given high doses of medication according to Zohra.
“My baby’s condition was worsening by the minute. I couldn’t stop crying. My world was falling apart,” says Zohra Bibi, tearing up even as she was describing this. “After taking the antibiotics, my baby started vomiting and his temperature continued to go up.”
It was then that they decided to shift hospitals and admitted the baby to Aga Khan Maternal and Child Centre (AKMCC) in Hyderabad which offers 24-hour Emergency Services for children.
After stabilizing Sher Khan’s condition, the doctor there recommends to the parents to shift the baby to Aga Khan University Hospital in Karachi where high quality, world class, specialized treatment could be delivered as Aga Khan University Hospital offers all services under one roof. The Aga Khan University Hospital is one of the best hospitals in Pakistan. AKMCC arranged for an ambulance to shift the patient to Karachi and the patient was taken into the Emergency services at AKUH which has 13 beds to deal with child emergencies.
Sher Khan was taken to the Intensive Care Unit (ICU) at Aga Khan University Hospital and his parents were counseled by the best doctors and qualified nurses through this stressful and uncertain time.
Patient certainty is a priority at the Aga Khan University Hospital as especially when it comes to pediatric patients.
Sher Khan’s condition improved after a couple of days and he was shifted to the Special Care Unit.
“I was so happy with the treatment and care are given to my child at AKUH,” says Zohra Bibi. “Dr. Faiza Jinnah who was my doctor was compassionate and explained everything really well. She explained the medication doses and what side effects may be caused as a result and told us how to keep the wound clean and dry so the infection would heal faster.”
“I was really pleased with the arrangements Aga Khan University Hospital made for how they transferred us from Hyderabad to Karachi,” says Mohammad Khalid who is the uncle of the baby. “During such a challenging time it was a relief to be given care at an institute that had strong systems in place to facilitate patients.”
The baby has now been discharged and the family received welfare for the treatment as they had applied for.
